Konami announced this week, that the Switch exclusive Super Bomberman R would receive a free update bringing along a new mode, unlockable characters, additional story content, and gameplay tweaks. The free update is not the first free update of additional content Konami has added to the Switch exclusive outing for Bomberman– but the flow of free nuggets of content is certainly welcome.
The biggest chunk of the update is the addition of Grand Prix to the selection of battle game modes. In Grand Prix, two teams face-off in either Classic Bomber or Crystal in a fight to score the most points out of the two rounds of play. Teams can consist of 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 both locally and online by connecting up to six Nintendo Switch consoles.
In Crystal, teams try to collect the most crystals on the stage to win. In Classic Bomber, teams compete with the standard Bomberman rules trying to blow up your enemies. In both modes, when you die you will be resurrected after a set time.
On top of the additional mode, a total of ten new characters have been added to the roster with nods to other gaming franchises, including:
- Option Bomber A
- Option Bomber B
- Reiko Bomber
- Shiori Fujisaki Bomber
- Jehuty Bomber
- Anubis Bomber
- Dracula Bomber
- Princess Tomato Bomber
- Bubble Head Bomber
- Goemon Bomber
After completing the story mode, Bomber Planet World will be accessible as a part of this update. The update also sees gameplay balancing to certain characters special abilities as well as camera and control fixes.
The additional content and changes made towards gameplay issues will help revitalize what was already a fantastic entry in the Switch library. Hopefully, Konami continues their support for Super Bomberman R further into the 8 month old game’s life.
